Martina Rötlingová
Martina Rötlingová (1987) works primarily with figurative painting in which she critically analyses and evaluates women’s experience in relation to digital media. She has long exploited the subversive potential of recontextualizing the female nude, which for many centuries has rested primarily in the hands of male actors, intended mainly for the eyes of male viewers. Here, the woman was seen as an object of male desire, subordinate to his fetishising gaze, which functioned as a means of control and domination. Rötlingová draws on the tradition of the female nude, but situates it within the female experience. She takes absolute power over her body and brings self-presentation into own hands. In the author’s rendition, the female nude becomes an instrument of personal liberation and male discomfiture.
Rötlingová studied at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica at the Faculty of Fine Arts in the studio of contemporary painting. She regularly presents her work at home and abroad in solo and collective exhibitions (including in Slovakia, Czech Republic, France, Belgium, Italy, Colombia, and Bulgaria). She lives and works in Antwerp.
